THE NPBA PRO BONO AWARD

The NPBA Pro Bono Award seeks to annually honor a Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association (NPBA) member who has made outstanding pro bono contributions by improving or delivering volunteer legal services to our community’s poor and disadvantaged. These services are critical for the increasing number of people in our area living in poverty who need legal representation to improve their lives.

Criteria:

The NPBA Professional Committee will select the recipient of the award based on the following nonexclusive criteria:

  • Dedication to the development and delivery of legal services to persons of limited means or low-income communities through a pro bono program.
  • Significant efforts have been made toward developing innovative approaches to delivering volunteer legal services.
  • Participation in an activity that resulted in satisfying previously unmet needs or in extending services to underserved segments of the population.
  • Successful advocacy of pro bono cases that favorably affected the provision of other services to persons of limited means or low-income communities.
  • Successful work towards legislation that contributed substantially to legal services to persons of limited means or low-income communities.
  • Exemplary service by emerging pro bono leaders who have shown outstanding accomplishments and achievements that have positively impacted the delivery of pro bono legal services through volunteer, financial, and other meaningful contributions.
  • The nominee must be a member of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association.
